Review
For Learning Game: 'In part it's the thoughtful autobiographical reflections of a wise & successful teacher. At another level it's a rather challenging how-to manual for less experienced teachers & for parents...Every jargon-free word that he writes rolls pleasurably round the mouth like good brandy. The prose is marked by a rare & incisive blend of informality & precision' Independent 'A true, wise, morale- boosting manifesto' Peter Conrad, Observer

Product Description
Someone has stolen Patrick Balfour's identity. A successful headmaster of a London school, a regular broadcaster and a writer of historical novels, as well as having a fairly spicy private life, Balfour is the object of some unsuprising envy. Yet who would be so malicious as to commit identity fraud and frame Patrick as a thief and a paedophile, using his national insurance number and impersonating his handwriting? As Patrick is teased by a series of letters, it becomes apparent that his adversary is certainly better- read that him and he is sent off on a tense literary chase, picking up clues from Kafka's The Trial to R L Stevenson and to Joseph Clark, a 17th Century contortionist. Patrick's morale begins to collapse - the police don't believe him and his daughter rejects him. Desperate he decides he must pursue his pursuer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smith back on top again, 20 Aug 2004
By grc (Surrey) - See all my reviews
If you are one of the unfortunate few who have yet to read 'SUMMER IN FEBRUARY' or 'IN FLIGHT' then get stuck into Smith's new novel . Dramatically different to his former novels but hard to put down and the quality of writing still retaining that ' Brian Moore ' feel. If you buy one book this year , make this that book - you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I have read this year, 31 Aug 2004
I have read over 30 books this year - none however matched this one and I am already half way through Jonathan Smiths last book 'Summer in February'. I actually bought this book because of the cover , believe it or not ! All I can say is that this is a brilliantly written novel - I read the last 120 pages in one go late at night . It is hard to put down and because of the way Smith continually changes from scene to scene you never have a chance to drift off. I recommend this to anyone who loves a damn good novel - a well written novel . Its so fun when you discover a new author.Jonathan Smith - add me to your fan club !

5.0 out of 5 stars The cover is great but the book is even better!, 1 Sep 2004
By A Customer
I confess I bought this book because I liked the Edward Hopper picture on the front cover. It just shows you can sometimes be rewarded by buying a book on a hunch.
This is a chilling psychological thriller. If like me you've never really thought about having your identity stolen Night Windows will really get you thinking. What makes it authentic is that Jonathan Smith himself was a victim of identity theft and fraud a few years back.
Smith writes in an easy style and manages to keep a brisk pace without losing richness of character. I read the last 100 pages in one session and felt like I'd been run over by a bus.
