Product Description

Review

'Simple, exact prose catches the vernacular flavour of the period and the prismatic personalities of the characters as they lay themselves bare to the sins of the flesh, the tricks of religious pretence and society's stifling order. Rogers is a vivid and intelligent writer whose work deserves a wide audience here' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

GUARDIAN 2.5.91

There is a rich vein of comedy in this beautifully written book which deals so profoundly with the attractions of idealism and the confusion between sexual and religious feeling. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its best, 29 Mar 2009
This compelling narrative is told from the perspective of four very different women, who live and work for the mysterious and charismatic minister, Mr Wroe. The lives and loves of the four women emerge through the tangled affairs of Wroe and his strange church. Although it is a work of fiction, the historical aspects (the history of the church, the place where the women would have lived) are meticulously researched and feel incredibly real. Part mystery, part history, part romance, this book really does have something for everyone. The book caused a stir a few years ago when it was serialised by the BBC. If you like novels with strong characters and vivid, narrative voices you will love this book.
