'Piercing wit and accelerated action in finely paced style.' TIME OUT 'The missing link between Dick Emery and Bret Easton Ellis.' Product Description
Dennis 'The Menace' Pike, former wild man of Tottenham, is going grey and going straight. Anyway, it was hard work being a yob- the birds, the brawls, the endless beers- and he hasn't really got the energy any more for life on the edge. Then two old faces turn up from the past- the Bishop brothers, Chas and Noel. Famously inept, they were bad news then, and they haven't aged well. What's worse, they need Pike's expertise on a scheme wealth distribution really- offloading one of the old gang's ill-gotten millions. Robbing the robbers- now what's criminal about that? Pike, still haunted by what happened one wreckless night all those years ago, refuses to get involved. But old habits die hard, and when he suddenly finds his bank account tampered with, Pike is drawn back into a world he spent ten years escaping. Thug or mug, he is nevertheless forced to confront a man so psychotically unhinged that his own youth seems like mere kids' stuff...A slick, razor-sharp novel, FULL WHACK is packed full of searing wit, scurrilous characters and nefarious knock-about.

5.0 out of 5 stars He hasn't beaten this one., 19 Dec 1999

This is Higson's best book. The hero is a sane man in an insane world, trying to hold on to the peace he has earned. The black humour isn't carried to the gruesome extreme of Higson's other work, and is much more powerful for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars An average read that should be better., 15 Feb 2001
By A Customer
A fun book that is very amusuing in places, with Dennis' (the main character) problems seemingly growing all the time. The book never really gets going and once the plot is in place, fails to deliver the expected humour and ending. Full whack is too short and as such does not create the atmosphere that is necessary to give you a really good laugh, though there are some funny moments. This is an average book with enough to keep you smiling throughout but not nearly as good as other authors of the same genre such as Christopher Brookmyre and Carl Hiaasen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Side To Charles Higson, 26 April 2001
By K. Fogarty (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Full Whack (Paperback)
This was the first novel I'd read by Charles Higson. I found out it was the same person who wrote so well on The Fast Show, Reeves & Mortimer & Harry Enfield. I wanted to see if the book followed the style of writing and off-the-wall characters that Higson had developed for those television series.

In this novel, Higson has created some larger than life and rather nasty characters. Gladly nothing as zany as the characters he has created in his TV writings. The story doesn't allow for that kind of creation, and its more realistic for it.

The writing shows another side to the writer, a slightly more serious side than his TV personas, but there is still a few Higsonesque comedy moments contained within the plot.

The story itself is excellently put together and shows why Charles Higson is one of the brightest British writers around at the moment.

Ultimately a satisfying read, and it encouraged me to seek out his other novels. None of which have left me disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better ones
I have read several of Higson's books and this one is one of the better ones. Yes it is still very dark and violent but quite amusing in parts. I enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, pacey read but a bit thin
This is a gruesome and darkly comic piece which is an engaging, if at times rather stomach-churning read (maybe it's a girl thing as I noticed none of the other reviews mention... Read more
