4.0 out of 5 stars A spell binding mystery on the edge of the modern world., 4 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Monkey Beach (Paperback)
This book would be hard to categorise in terms of a genre and this is one of the reasons I found it so fresh and engaging. It is a combination of coming-of-age and folk mysticism as well as a mystery and a ghost story. What it certainly is, is a spell-binding read which any reader will find hard to put down.

Lisa-Marie is a young First Nations woman, living in remote British Columbia, who has a gift for visions and clairvoyance. Her younger brother Jimmy has gone missing on a fishing trip and the family is strained with the uncertainty of what has happened to him. Lisa-Marie takes us on a frankly told journey to understand what has happened and what has brought her and her family to this point in time.

I was hooked on the story and loved the descriptions of the life and scenery of the North West Canadian coastal life. This really is a special book which I found hard to put down. The mood of the book stayed with me after closing the final pages and I eagerly await a second novel from this excting author.
