Product Description

As the wife of a Resistance member in German-occupied Belgium, Claire Daussois has grown used to hiding strange men in her attic. By the end of 1943, the tiny room has housed dozens of Allied airmen, soldiers and other refugees, whom Claire nurses and harbours from the perpetual threat of discovery by the Gestapo. The B-17 bomber that crash-lands outside Claire's village of Delahaut contains the man who will be both the last and the most significant of the attic's residents: US Air Force pilot Ted Brice. Ted is found severely wounded and semi-conscious by ten-year-old Jean Benoit minutes before the Germans begin their search for survivors. Knowing of Claire's connections with the Resistance, and desperate to atone for his father's shameful collaboration, Jean realises that Claire is the pilot's only hope of survival. The month that follows will stay with them both for the rest of their lives. A few weeks only, a handful of days, it is a period in which the war recedes in the face of more powerful forces - before imposing itself once more with shocking suddenness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read, 24 Nov 2006
By Mrs. D. Miles "Vicky40" (West Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I adored this book and couldn't wait to find the time to read each chapter. It is a rather different genre for Anita Shreve, but her gentle, straightforward style of writing remains to the credit of this book. It is the story of the Resistance in Belgium and of Ted, an American pilot whose plane has crashed and who is rescued by the child of a Nazi collaborator. He is hidden and nursed back to health by Clare Dussois, the wife of Henri, a Resistance member. Although Clare has nursed many others and helped them to escape, something special develops between herself and Ted, amidst the Nazi atrocities being carried out around them. Clare lives in constant fear of being discovered by the Germans or of being betrayed by others and the tension is very apparent. There are many horrific facts written within this story but, running through it, is a gentle love story and this makes this book much more than a testament to those brave people who risked their lives to save others. I reflected upon events and what the alternatives may have been, long after I had finished this wonderful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping love story set in Belgium in the Second World War., 17 Mar 2000
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting! It's set in World War II in occupied Belgium and is the story of downed fighter pilot, Ted Brice, and his relationship with Resistance member, Claire Dussois.

The writer really makes you imagine how terrifying life must have been for people in an occupied country and the fear that they lived under on a daily basis.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story and I have to say that the ending, whilst fairly unexpected, is satisfying although a bit on the sad side! Excellent stuff!

3.0 out of 5 stars A rather flat love story., 19 Sep 2002
By Christine L (Berkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Even though it's one of my favourite periods of history to read about, I found this book strangely uninspiring. The historical facts are interesting and chilling, but the love story felt strangely banal. In a lot of ways this book would have been more interesting without the love story, which feels weird to say since the love story is the deeper story of resistance in this book.

On the positive side it was quite difficult to guess the outcome and you were left wondering about many things right until the last chapter.

I think this is the kind of book that you take with you when you travel, or that you keep by your bedside when you don't have time to devote yourself completely to a story. I found that I enjoyed it while reading it, but I didn't miss it when I didn't.
