3.0 out of 5 stars Troubleshooters series, 23 Jun 2009
By Detra Fitch (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For years Jimmy Nash had performed ultra-covert missions as a "Ghost" agent. But when Nash quit and walked away, his ruthless bosses refused to let him go. Two months ago the shadowy government agency almost succeeded in killing Nash. His former partner, Lawrence "Deck" Decker, with help from a (very) few number of people, help fake his death to protect him. Now Nash is hidden away in a safe house (more like a fortress) to recover from his critical injuries. With Nash at the safe house is his fiancée, Tess Bailey, FBI Agent Jules Cassidy and his life partner, and Sam Starrett (former SEAL). Other than them, only Deck knows Nash is alive.

Dave Malkoff takes Sophia Ghaffari to see her dying father at a hospital. As Dave is getting the car so they may leave the medical facility, he is stabbed and left for dead. The two have no idea that all their troubles were just beginning, nor that it all has to do with their deceased friend Nash.

Deck goes to Tess and Jimmy's place to find that the receptionist of Troubleshooters Incorporated (T.I.), Tracy Shapiro, has been caring for the place since Nash's death. Tracy lives upstairs. Deck is shocked when he learns that out of all the people and agents from I.T., it is the simple receptionist who has figured out that Nash still breathes. Unable to let her leave the place with that piece of truth in her head, Deck must take Tracy with him as he returns to the safe house. As they begin their journey, Dr. Jo Heissman walks up. No one knows whether the shrink is still with the dark agency or not and no one trusts her one iota. But soon it no longer matters, because everyone becomes marked for removal.

*** THREE STARS! There are a lot of characters mixed in this suspenseful story. If you get busy and have to put the book down for more than about two days, chances are good you will be lost when you return. There is just SO much constantly going on with all the characters that I do not believe there is any way to keep it all straight unless you have lots of time to devote to reading. The author keeps everyone in three groups. Of course, there is the group at the safe house and much drama is happening between the people there. Dave and Sophia are the second group and they are interested in each other, but her horrible past keeps him at bay. Deck and Tracy are the third group. They are also attracted to each other, but it is Deck's problems keeping them apart. All-in-all, this is a good addition to the series, but you better have plenty of reading time if you want to enjoy it. ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gripping, 4 Jan 2010
By Needs to get out more (Sheffield, Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
I had never read a Suzanne Brockman before when I picked this up and it is obviously not sensible to come into a series at book 14 but the copy did not make it clear that it was one of a series.

However .... I was completely gripped by the book and especially the opening when Dave concentrates on his love for Sophia to keep his mind off his torture. Then the author goes back in time so that we can see how we got there and you are left in suspense for most of the rest of the book knowing that it is going to happen but not actually seeing how ! This book is complex and full of different story lines - but I did not find them difficult to keep straight in my mind. It has plenty of engaging characters and answers questions which have been raised in other books and seems to involve or at least mention most of the main characters. It is full of real tension and some good and mildly kinky sex.

Having finished this book I immediately bought the previous 13 (thank heavens for Amazon Marketplace as most of them were out of print at the time) and read them in the correct order - then I understood some of what I had missed the first time ... like the significant importance of that kiss !

You can read this as a stand alone but it is better read as part of the series. I found it completely unputdownable. terrific. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark of the Night, 12 Aug 2009
By loves to read (wales, uk) - See all my reviews
I have just finished this book and it was great the need to keep reading there. This is the story of lots of couple but the mains one in Decker and Tracy . They have worked together he being her boss at trouble shooter Tracy is the first face that they see . There is more about David and Sophia and once again Tess and Nash. This is a good read again we touch base with old friend form past book Robin and Julis is in this book too along with Sam and Alissa. A fast pace story and easy to follow.
