2.0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of this author, 4 Feb 2010
By B. Cook (Devon, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Much as i hate to criticise Julie Garwoods writing as she has long been one of my favourite authors, i really must review this book as it is absolutely awful. Perhaps that is a bit unfair it would be absolutely average for another author but I, like many others expect much better from Garwood.
Its the typical story of a gorgeous, huge, ruggedly good looking FBI agent (who fortunately has dual nationality so he can be descended from one of the scottish lairds in her previous much loved book The Bride) who helps out a friend (of 2 weeks) by bodyguarding the friends sisters flatmate (yes! a tortuous very loose connection) who in the space of a day has several people trying to kill her for very complicated, ridiculous reasons. The story and characters are very shallow and so nauseatingly impressed by each other - the hero manages to solve various other crimes along the way much to the admiration of the poor ordinary detectives who have worked cases for ages only to have the hero solve them for them in 5 minutes.
A lot of time is given to one of the "hitmen" which really doesn't add to the story. Having read several pages describing all his previous "hits" and getting very frustrated and bored i realised i was supposed to be laughing but it was just not funny and went on far too long.
The romance between the two leads was lukewarm with hardly any verbal interaction and in the end i really didn't care what happened to either of them, the book was immediately consigned to the charity shop bag before i went off to cry with disappointment and disgust.
I know that a lot of my points could also be made of her previous books which despite being some of my all time favourites i have to admit are a bit corny. BUT they are written with style and a real flair for making you love the characters and are also really witty, and the romance is heartwarming leaving me with a big silly grin on my face while i am reading them. This book is a watered down version without any redeeming factors, i gave JG the benefit of the doubt on Fire and Ice and Shadow Music but 3 poor books in a row does not bode well and i won't be buying anymore of her books until they have been reviewed - unthinkable!!
Look on the Fantasy Fiction website for a list of her earlier work and try them first my favourites include The Secret, Ransom, Saving Grace, The Prize and most of the rest of her medieval and regency books.
