5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping action filled novel - pure class, 20 Sep 2005
By Bart Samyn "bsamyn" (Roeselare, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mr. Flint is the ultimate storyteller. I've purchased this book and literally devoured it in one night (without sleep unfortunately for me), not being capable to leave it alone. Was this a surprise, not really. Everyone who read "1632" and successors, or the excellent "Belisarius series" with David Drake, will already know this perfectly well.

Nevertheless this is a story of e new kind to Mr. Flint, more pure alternative history and less sf oriented. It tells a new and different story about the American-British war of 1812-1815 with a special twist. No I will not tell you how it evolves ... I'm sure that I would only spoil the story.

A small remark nevertheless: I cannot judge the small details related to the events and places as described in this book as far as they occur in the States, but when the author describes - in a poetic way - how John Quincy Adams during the peace negotiations in Ghent (Low Countries, currently Belgium) looks across the wide open seas of the North Sea ... Well, coming from Belgium I do know that Ghent is today a relative small seaport, thanks to a canal which connects the port to the mouth of the river "Schelde", a canal that did not exist yet in 1814 and also that GHent is more than 50 km (+/- 30 miles) away from that same North Sea. Small background error of course, not harming in the least the story, but strange and hopefully not repeated in other more important details.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did anyone finish this book?, 10 Mar 2009
It's rare for me to be so disappointed by a novel, especially when I have enjoyed previous works by the same author, but after 60 pages or so I gave up as I still hadn't a clue what the book was about and it certainly didn't entice me to lose any sleep.
I am a history buff and a great fan of alternative fiction so I was looking forward to one set in an unusual period and event; pity the author didn't try and get me engaged in the story.
I'm sure there's some good writing in there, but I haven't the will to try and find what it is.
