4.0 out of 5 stars A new twist on an LA investigation mystery, 18 April 2003
By Dianna Bingham (Brisbane, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Blues in the Night is the first in a series introducing Molly Blume, a freelance true crime reporter, another finely drawn character who is believable, sympathetic and three dimensional, even in a setting that might be alien to the reader. She is a modern Orthodox Jew living in modern unorthodox LA, a 20-something divorcee with a deep faith and short skirts. When her eye is caught by a brief report on an hit and run accident off Mulholland Drive in Laurel Canyon about an unidentified woman wearing a nightie, leaving her unconscious and seriously injured, something sparks her interest and she decides to investigate. So starts a fearless investigation that leads Molly into reluctant answers that stirs up the ghost of murders past and puts her own life at risk.

The question of glossaries versus in-text explanation is always vexed and here, the author has opted for in-text explanations, whilst not patronising or overwhelming did take me briefly out of the story when I came across them, although I was happy to know what the Jewish terms meant. The place of religion in Molly’s life is part of who she is and Ms Krich does a great job of knitting the Jewish faith – and the new Rabbi, an old boyfriend – into the storyline. Molly really is a worth successor to Jessie Drake.
