2.0 out of 5 stars Death by Holy Boredom!, 28 Oct 2002
By A Customer
There is no doubt that P D James is a great writer of crime fiction. Her prose and narrative are elegant and intelligent without subduing the tension and sinister nature of her stories but this book is awful. The plot is laboured and the characters are, frankly, predictable and one dimensional. I think this book is a clear example of authors and publishers trading of a famous name without really making a true appraisal of the work.
A great disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars A chore to reach the last para, 11 Jul 2002
By A Customer
My love for mystery novels was inspired by Margery Allingham, Agatha Chrisite, Catherine Aird and Ngaio Marsh. Therefore, after reading the glowing reviews of the works of P.D. James, I didn't hesitate to plunge into a number of her books, including this one, the earlier "Designs and Devices" and one or two more.
I was dashed disappointed. I find Miss James' methods plodding and tortuous. The obscene details of some of her murderer's fetishes would put off Hanibal Lectern.
The prospects of Adam's romance and probable marriage are yawn making...Subtle, no. Intensely, boringly contrived, yes.
What comes accross strongly in this author's efforts is her relentless desire to sound nonchalantly authorative and somehow superior to her characters ... odd to say the least.
From circa Chapter Two, one begins to wonder Why one is reading this book ... it's *supposed* to be superb ... a bit more into the tale and one doesn't actually care who did what and to continue to suffer the author's convoluted attempts to explain away the supposed catalysts behind the murder is unfairly exasperating and can become excruciating.
