3.0 out of 5 stars Still leaves you in limbo, 17 Sep 2002
You know where its heading....you just wish it would get there faster!

The plot developed during Blood and Iron is continued in this volume. It follows the rise of Jake Featherston's Freedom party in the CSA back from obscurity after its fall from grace in the early 20s. It takes a long time for anything to happen though!

This is mirrored by increasing isolation and prosperity in Socialist USA.

There are, of course, things that just don't work. For example the repression by US forces in Canada that is at odds with social progress in the USA itself - would a socialist administration do that to a neighbour that shares a two thousand mile border? Probably not.

Although enjoyable, the plot is at times frustratingly slow. It's also very predictable. The basic rule is that US schemes and US forces always triumph! Rebellions are foiled and the Japanese thwarted in their aims.

I can't wait for the next episode to see if the US get what's coming to them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff..., 27 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Much of it may be trite and the writing uneven, but the basic premise of a Hitler-like figure (also an embittered NCO) arising in the defeated Confederacy is a fascinating one. How far can Turteledove push the parallels? Clearly the blacks, er, African-Americans, are the equivalents of Jews and I fully expect massacres and an eventual Final Solution. One thing's for sure, I'll be reading the next one...
