4.0 out of 5 stars worth a read if you're interested in kubrick, 15 Mar 2007
By Cain Kendrick (Rotten Row, UK) - See all my reviews
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how Kubrick worked on getting a screenplay done. There are also some insights into what he thought about other directors and actors and writers etc. However, I found that Raphael came across as being paranoid and insecure. I don't like some of the things he writes as it seems that he just didn't like working for someone else who was his "boss". He constantly tries to make himself seem like the clever guy in control of the situation and makes out that Kubrick is some sort of agoraphobic egomaniac. That said, it is an entertaining read. I would also recommend [...] if you want further insights into what it was like to work with arguably the most talented director of the last century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insight to Genius!, 29 April 2003
By A Customer
As a fan of the work of Stanley Kubrick I was very keen on reading this memoir. This book is an account of the later years of Kubrick and his work with Frederic Raphael. Do not let this put you off! This is an honest view of how one man saw Stanley Kubrick. As everyone knows, Kubrick was a very private man and it is very interesting to see how he interacted with another artist. The isolated existence of Stanley Kubrick does not mean that he was some kind of hermit and this memoir shows how genuine a person Stanley Kubrick was. Another nice surprise that comes with this novel is the insight to the work of Raphael himself. 'Eyes Wide Shut' is Kubrick's last film and deserves much more praise as a cinematic work of art. If you enjoy Kubrick's work and would like to know more then you should definitely try this very readable memoir of an important time in cinema history.
