3.0 out of 5 stars A rather patchy but entertaining read, 9 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This is the first Anne Perry novel I've read and I'm looking forward to reading more. This may not have been the best one to try first, it has references to the 'Devil's Acre' which is presumably an earlier book, and I suspect it lacks the depth of some of her other fiction. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable read and didn't rely on any prior knowledge. Perry captures the spirit of Victorian London very well (insofar as I can tell), and her characters are generally well drawn. Her prose style makes for easy reading and she is able to convey information without being obviously didactic. The book does suffer from some serious flaws unfortunately. The plot revolves around the blackmail of several eminent persons; all can be accused of committing acts which will cause their disgrace, although all are innocent. In fact they are so innocent and virtuous that it strains credibility. The effect of moral constraints in Victorian England seems exaggerated, even though Perry sets it against the Baccarat Scandal which demonstrated the importance of retaining social respectability. The plot is also multi threaded, with different people investigating the case in various ways. The result is that the same points are made several times, by different characters but in remarkably similar ways. The role of the housekeeper (in particular how she inveigles her way into the investigation) seemed too far fetched to work convincingly. I'm also not sure why Perry tried to make the eighty year old Aunt Vespasia into some sort of beautiful femme fetale (although I have my suspicions). But perhaps the biggest flaw of the novel is its denouement, it is rushed and far from satisfactory, in fact it seemed like rather a cop out. However, setting these failings aside, the story has many compensations for these shortcomings. The relationships between the characters, especially between the sexes, are subtly depicted, Perry is a woman writer who understands men better than most. The flow of the book enables the reader to easily overlook most of its weaknesses while being swept along by the story. I also thoroughly enjoyed Perry's ability to show me around the streets of Victorian London, a very realistic journey that added a lot of spice to the adventure we were embarked upon. I doubt if this will turn out to be her strongest work, but it is still a recommendable read.
