3.0 out of 5 stars This is an exciting memoir, but I felt like a voyeur., 29 Aug 1999
By A Customer
"Hilary and Jackie" goes too far in its depiction of the tempestuous life of Jacqueline du Pre, the gifted cellist who died of MS. Although I can appreciate the honesty of her siblings who alternate in writing this account, they are too revealing of the most intimate details of their lives, some of which would have been better left under wraps. Instead of preserving du Pre's memory, they are desecrating it by laying bare all the sordid details of Jackie's mental problems, her compulsions, and the slavish desire of her family to give in to her every whim. In spite of their talent, the family depicted here is dysfunctional. No family should cater to one person, no matter how gifted he or she is, leaving the others in that person's shadow. It throws everyone off balance, and it is terribly unfair. I don't think the du Pre's did Jackie a favor to treat her with kid gloves. She could have used a little normalcy in her life. Perhaps she would have been less tormented. Overall, this book is an extremely depressing account of a tragic family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story, 1 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book, with one exception - the description of the affair was difficult to read. Everyone involved comes out looking horrible, even Hilary. I really wished she would grow a backbone and confront her sister or her husband. Talk about dysfunctional families. Kiffer is a selfish jerk and Jacqueline just goes after whatever she wants, regardless of the impact on other people. It is to Hilary's credit that she stayed on speaking terms with her sister.

however, I'd still give this book five stars because it takes guts to write about someone so well-known, and especially when such difficult material is part of your story.

I think the authors showed respect for Jacqueline by waiting 10 years after her death to publish. It's unreasonable to say that's too soon, in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars reality., 23 Sep 2000
By A Customer
i read 'hilary and jackie' a few months ago and also saw the film(which i thought was very well done). on reading the other comments i find it difficult to understand why any "reader" would shy away from facts. reality is the quinessential form of all good writing and by encasing du pre in amber i think we are detaining the true duty of a reader. i think it is important to divorce the genius and the woman and appreciate her, then as the genius we all want to be.
