5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, passionate and well written., 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Waiting in Vain (Paperback)
A friend had the book and she was finding it somewhat difficult to read, so she gave to me since I am an avid reader. I found the book to be a good read, but not always an easy read because it made me think about the relationships in my life. I have read a ton of romance novels and few have dealt with the psychological impact of love. Fire and Sylvia were excellent characters and I wondered if Sylvia would remain tied to her materialistic world. I loved reading about the relationships in this book, they were all tied together in some fashion and we got a chance to see how each relationship changed another. Fire is like no other man I have ever encountered in a romance book, he is a black man who is comfortable in his own skin. And even though he is wealthy and famous, he does not feel as if the money or fame makes him who he is. Colin, I must give you kudos for such great writing. I am waiting for you next book. Take your time and make it good!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The sexiest book I've ever read, 21 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Waiting in Vain (Hardcover)
Waiting In Vain is the sexiest book that I've ever read. Colin Channer is a seducer and a word weaver. And this story has such emotional power. Fire is every black woman's dream--a black man who is intelligent, sensitive, cosmopolitan, earthy, and brave. The relationship between Fire and Sylvia is one of the most touching renditions of black love that I've ever read. And Channer certainly understands women. His female characters are so complex, so well detailed, so wonderfull flawed. This is not just another from a man's perspective. It's a novel from the perspective of a craftsman and a thinker. I'm so happy to see that there is a young black male writer who has not fallen into the kind of formulaic rut that guides the work of authors such as Omar Tyree and Eric Jerome Dickey. Before reading Waiting In Vain I had begun to lose faith in the work of young African American writers. After reading Waiting In Vain my faith has been renewed. This novel is so many things--funny, philosophical, erotic, suspenseful, political and spiritual all in one. Mark my words, Waiting In Vain has marked the start of an auspicious career. He just might be the next big thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars CASSIE, 22 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Waiting in Vain (Paperback)
I have to advise everyone to buy this book, it is absolutely brilliant and the best book I have ever read.
I love the way the author infuses poetry when describing people, events, love and places.
I would love to have such a good, strong, educated, and loving man like Fire, this character is fantastic (why can't he be real and in my life).
My parents are also Jamaican and I love going there so when this book described Jamaica it brought back so many rich, vibrant and happy memories.
Overall, this is a brilliant story and I can't think of any words to describe it so please everyone buy it so you can understand what I am trying to say.
