5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, Compact & Concise, 8 Sep 2003
I have seen several romanised dictionaries since I began to learn this language and I must say that this is the best one I have come across so far.

With over 50,000 entries, this book should cover most words that a beginner or intermediate learner will encounter.
As a beginner in Japanese, I have found the romanised Japanese very helpful. But even better, as I am beginning to learn to read the Japanese characters, the Kanji included next to each translation makes this book even more useful at the next level.
It even contains a Romanji/Hiragana/Katakana syllable chart at the start as a handy reference for all level of learners.

I would recommend this book to any beginner who has yet to find a decent dictionary and to intermediate learners who are looking for extra resource material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning Japanese, 26 April 2004
By Matthew Radley (Pitsea, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
well this book has everything i need to know in order to look up phrasesand find out certain words if needed. The kanji characters are also veryuseful as i recently started drawing manga and find it useful to drawjapanese characters on the background signs.
It also tells you how the word is spelt in english and so you can practicepronuncing it. With over 5,000 entries i recommend this book for anyonewanting to learn some basic japanese. I will also be taking this book wheni plan my visit for Japan ^_^

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOU MONEY ON THIS ONE, 12 April 2005
Well, I'm only a beginner in Japanese, but this particular book's had it for me. Either my Japanese teacher (a native Japanese) does not know jack about Japanese or the authors of this book forgot to remind readers to 'handle it with care'. I mean, do not believe the equivalents given in either of the parts of the dictionary. Although it seems that the English-Japanese version is slightly better or should I say a bit more reliable, they are both quite out-of-the-context and thus you should not rely on them unless you have consulted some other sources.

I love this dictionary, mainly for the fact that it allows you to search for words phonetically, and also gives you an incredibly useful translation in romaji - the main reason to... Read more
