4.0 out of 5 stars The Lance and the Shield, 9 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This wonderful biography of Sitting Bull is an absolute MUST for anyone with an interest in Native American history and lives. Well-written and eminently accessible, it is a biography that is hard to put down, displaying a deep understanding of the life-ways of the Lakota Sioux. The peoples and relationships of the 19th century plains become truly 3-dimensional through the graphic and beautiful descriptions in the text. Detailed explanations of cultural beliefs and traditions are seamlessly interwoven throughout the rich narrative, illuminating the images of landscapes and lives, and capturing the imagination. Here is a book that presents more than just mythology - a book that enables us to begin to understand the inevitable and tragic clash of cultures.

4.0 out of 5 stars A desperate Chapter in America's recent past., 28 July 1999
By A Customer
The recent history of the proud and noble North American Indians makes for a harrowing read ...

Sitting Bull was the epitome of a Souix Warrior Chief and his life and his ruin is the central theme around which the tragic history of the Amercian Indians is told.

This is an excellent book and it vividly brings to life a difficult period in a young country's history, a period which it is still trying to come to terms with.
