4.0 out of 5 stars Feel Good Fiction, 12 Jan 2009
By Clarissa (NE England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who's That Girl? (Paperback)
I love Alexandra Potter's writing style, although sometimes the themes of the books are a little unusual. That's the beauty of fiction: it can allow you to escape from the confines of reality - Alexandra does this beautifully, yet fairly believably, in this book.

As I began to read Who's That Girl, I found myself reading too quickly - I'd adapted my reading style to the hyper main character, and the way I envisaged her talking! I found it easy to immerse myself in the book (to the detriment of my college work) and, against my expextations, didn't find the plot completely outlandish.

I don't want to give the story away, but would suggest that you give this book a try. It's easy to read, isn't too deep, and is an enjoyable way to pass some time.

1.0 out of 5 stars The blurb was more exciting, 11 Feb 2009
This review is from: Who's That Girl? (Paperback)
When I first came across `Who's That Girl?' in Borders Bookstore I was delighted as
I am a fan of time travel stories where one is able to change their destiny for the better as I have often asked myself what if? After reading the blurb and the first two pages I couldn't wait to leave, go home and start reading. By the sixth chapter I found it difficult to get into and was slightly bored but continued.

I loved the transition between Charlotte and Lottie, the storyline with Mr Goldstien, was good, His wife Cindy was actually one of my favourite characters even though she was just a minor character. However I was keen to find out how Charlotte's destiny was going to change which was what kept me going.

I was hoping that the list of do's and don'ts that Charlotte had drawn up for Lottie would have some strong relevance in the end but it did not really play its part. I drifted off many times but carried on because I was expecting a big bang ending which I never got. The man that Charlotte ended up with was predictable. There was no surprise or twist that most readers like to see in a story.

I did not believe Julian's explanation as to why he was in the Dorchester to me it seemed as if he could have still been lying because, it seemed staged and Charlotte took his answer for it so easily.

Miles was one of the main characters in the story but was kicked out very easily and there was no mention of him again apart from the Get Well card.

Charlotte went back and forth so many times from 2008 - 199- and not much had changed towards the end of the book. Not even the car she drove or her apartment.

Lottie seemed like she never really paid much attention to Charlotte's advice and I thought Potter would have use that as a surprise twist in the end to show the reader that in the end Lottie really did take note and `Wow! look at how Charlotte's life has changed in 2008'. Last but not least I felt robbed because after reading the whole book Charlotte's time travel was the usual quick and cheap way out to end a story. I was angry.

The blurb on the back was a very exciting false start to a book that could have been written really well. I couldn't wait to put the book down. Not good at all.

I have not given up on Potter...I will read `Me and Mr Darcy' and see how that one is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and sharp, 18 Jan 2009
This review is from: Who's That Girl? (Paperback)
I read all Potter's books but I wasn't keen on Mr. Darcy only because I don't really like Jane Austen (shoot me now!). Who's that Girl is funny, warm and I like the premise. The other characters such as Beatrice and Miles are very well rounded too and I couldn't put it down. Plus I did laugh out loud several times on the tube. Nice one.
