Review

'Bridget Jones for grown-ups! ... Women "of a certain age" will relate to Hope as she struggles to make sense of her life. An enjoyable holiday read.' -- My Weekly 'The novel is fun and frothy and very good' -- Evening Standard 'A witty, involving novel' -- Easy Living 'A statement of intent, if ever there was one!' -- Choice 'Funny, spiky, and with the ring of truth on every page' -- Rosie Thomas 'Funny, perceptive - I absolutely loved it.' -- Penny Vincenzi 'Funny, wise and proof that the perfect heroine doesn't have to be a chardonnay-swilling thirty-something, this made me laugh and weep from start to finish. Linda Kelsey has the knack of making you care about her characters and she deals with huge issues with the lightest touch. I wish I'd written this!' -- Cathy Kelly 'Funny, wise, true and not just for women of fifty!' -- Wendy Holden 'Compulsive and poignant with well drawn characters.' -- Catherine Alliott 'This is a coming-of-age novel with a difference. The age in question is 50, which these days is arguably more difficult to handle than those awkward teenage years. Wise, witty and wonderful.' -- Sue Peart, You Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars A new experience, 19 Aug 2007
I really did not think this was my sort of book but, unusually, I read it over a few days and, one morning I woke up and my first thought was to see what happened next. Very witty and quite moving in parts, I was pleasantly surprised. The characters were all well drawn particularly the heroine, Hope, with whom I found it easy to empathise partly because I am a man in my mid fifties with a wife about the same age but mainly because it so well written. The book was a new experience for me but an enriching and entertaining one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly funny and heart warming read, 9 Aug 2007
My wife suggested I read this after I inquired what she was laughing and subsequently crying about. It's a truly heart warming story to which every mother (and in this case father!) can relate. Incredibly funny, sometimes sad but thoroughly enjoyable. If you're a parent, it will definitely strike a chord.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!, 9 Aug 2007
By S. Freeman (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An honest portrayal of a character called Hope whom i almost felt i knew personally by the end of the book!
This is a story of a woman reaching her 50th birthday and all that happens in the year she turns 50.Upon turning 50 Hope shows that life certainly is far from over...she even takes a lover! It is full of great characters and this novel is diverse...funny at times, sad at others, i didn't want it to end. Linda Kelsey's writing is so open and down to earth i actually felt at times that i was reading someones personal journal. I am not yet 50 but i am looking forward to it now!!
An enormously enjoyable book, highly recommend...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was so looking forward to this book but was disappointed by the author's vanity. I could not relate to her 'lifestyle' and feel few women could. Read more
