5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and inventive, infused with perfectly pitched childish humour., 6 Feb 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Tree Goblins (Hardcover)
This is a great story, packed with wry illustrations in Melling's distinctive and charming style. Pitched perfectly for both boys and girls from age 5-9, it's especially wonderful for boys.
The tree goblins live in host trees which are not only alive but wander at will in the strange enchanted woods. The two main tree goblin characters are Butterfingers and Mildew whose slapstick antics falling out of their trees make my 5 year old chuckle long and hard. There are other unusual woodland creatures - the Wood Owl, the daft ground bat and the Snootle-pig, all of whom play a part in inadvertently moving three egglets further and further from their parents who, with an oddball goblin called Drips to help, must track them down and rescue them.
For those children that like non-fiction, there's about 20 pages of "factual information" about tree goblins before the story starts. This includes an introduction to each of the foolish characters, a double-page map to set the scene and a lovely note from the author inviting the reader to imagine being a tree goblin and describing how it would feel. This is an inspired start though the reader could equally well dive straight into this eccentric story and refer back to this material at a later stage if they felt so inclined. The tall tale itself is inventive, with strong boysy humour: little touches like "toenail tea", a sibling-sibling insult of "caterpillar's bottom", and vivid descriptions e.g. an angry face is like boiling custard. A quirky ending rounds the story off brilliantly. Smashing!
I think choose this over Stone Goblins if you can only have one, and if your child liked Melling's picture book The Tale of Jack Frost, then they'll absolutely love these Tree Goblins.
