Product Description

Product Description

Using book and CDs, Teach Yourself Bengali is the course for anyone who wants to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Bengali with confidence. Bengali stands sixth in the world in its number of speakers, has the richest and most developed modern literature in South Asia and is the national language of Bangladesh and the state language of West Bengal. There are also large Bengali-speaking communities in India, the Middle East, North America and Britain. The book is divided into three main parts: Part one deals with the sounds and the script. You will be introduced to the sounds and characters step by step, and each unit contains exercises for you to practise what you have learnt. Part two is concerned with communication: conversation and grammar. The units in this section are based on useful everyday dialogues which are also translated into English. The grammar section explains the structures found in the dialogues and then there are exercises for you to practise each point. All the dialogues are recorded on the accompanying audio, which is available separately or in a pack with the book. Part three is an optional section on literature. Here you will be introduced to some of the finer points of Bengali grammar and idiom through a series of short texts from West Bengal and Bangladesh. A cassette (ISBN 0 340 86031 6) or a double CD (ISBN 0 340 91381 9) are also available to accompany the book (ISBN 0 340 86029 4) and they can be purchased separately or as packs along with the book (cassette pack: 0 340 86030 8; CD pack: 0 340 91380 0).

5.0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself Bengali, 29 Jun 2004
By Ms. R. K. Platt (Durham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have only just bought this book (up to about unit 6 in the first chapter) but already I am really enjoying it. The alphabet is explained very well and it seems so easy now to recognise Bengali characters. Willam Radice deserves a medal for what he's done, seeing as Bengali is still very much a minority language in the UK. The only complaint I have is that without the CD's or cassettes it is very difficult to pronounce anything. So if you're going to buy this book, buy it with the CD's as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Teach yourself Bengali, 15 Oct 2003
This book and tape set is at the pinnacle of language teaching. The book is set into clear chapters that are backed up by the excellent audio tape that informs of correct pronounciation.
Vocabulary is built up at a steady pace without becoming tedious and you really feel as though you are achieving something as you progress through the book. Being white and English, Bengali initially appeared a very daunting launguage to learn but this set ensures you do not become overwhelmed.
After completing this course I have been able to communicate with Bengali natives with much more ease and truly understand their background, for which I am incredibly grateful. This set is a must for anyone wanting to be able to read and write or just speak Bengali.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning Bengali is FUN with This Book., 23 Aug 2001
I ordered this book as I intend to travel (in two months time) to West Bengal for postgraduate medical training. Within two days of studying this book, I managed to write many Bengali words. This book makes identifying Bengali words and phrases quite simple and smooth. A very good self-taught book that reflects on the modern teaching techniques at the University of London.

I like the way that William Radice has started with the script which you can learn in small chunks. Read more
