4.0 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff, 1 Oct 2007
By Algernon Flowers (Cotswolds, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Iron Hand (Stoneheart) (Hardcover)
With the first in this series, Stoneheart, Mr Fletcher came up with something new in children's fantasy writing in that the setting was unusual. For the two young children trapped in this startling adventure, there was no fantastic world to journey to because the backdrop was the city of London. However, in their London, statues and gargoyles come to life and they can make very dangerous enemies indeed.

At the end of that book, young George and his new friend Eddie are free but Gunner, the statue which has helped them, has been trapped by their enemy, The Walker. In Iron Hand, the two youngsters make plans to rescue him but, almost immediately, George is snatched by one of the many statues and carried aloft and much of this second book alternates between the incredible adventures they both have. However, there is a deadline to meet, for Gunner must be back on his plinth 'at turn of day'.

If you thought Stoneheart had pace, try Iron Hand. It is a breathless series of scrapes and escapes that involve some of the best known statues of London including the timely intervention of Boadicca and her daughters. If it's a little complicated in places, no youngster will mind, for this is a page turner of high invention in which the two children are given no time to draw breath. The number of frying pans leapt out of and the number of fires leapt into make this book really hot stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better and better, 8 Oct 2007

This review is from: Iron Hand (Stoneheart) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent follow up to the first superb book. Almost from the start our three heroes are seperated and spend most of the book fighting to stay alive and get back to help each other. Many old characters are met again and we learn much more about them. New charcters arive and by the end our group of heroes has grown, ready for the next challenge to come in book three. I can't wait!!!!!!

A wonderful book - even better than the first. Any teenager will be quite charmed by it; and quite a few adults too, come to that.

I loved this book. Essentially a teen book, as an adult I also found it a must read "page turner". Some interesting characters that keep you riveted.
