Review
A fantastical, fast-paced adventure. (Publishing News )

Product Description
Deep in the City something has been woken, so old that people have been walking past it for centuries without giving it a second look…’ When George breaks the dragon's head outside the Natural History Museum he awakes an ancient power. This prehistoric beast, sentry-still for centuries, hunts him down with a terrifying wrath. And this is just the beginning… The taints and spits – statues with opposing natures – are warring forces; wreaking deadly havoc on the cities landscape. The World War One gunner offers protection of sorts; and the wisdom of the Sphinx is legendary. But George and his companion Edie are trapped in a world of danger. And worse – they are quite alone. The rest of London is oblivious to their plight. This epic adventure exposes forces long-dormant in the fabric of London. After entering its richly original and breathtaking world, the city streets and skyline will never again seem the same!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminiscent of the Pullman trilogy., 5 Nov 2006
By ELH Browning "Esther-Lou" (Kingston Bagpuize, Oxon) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was given this book by a friend who said she thought it might be the next best thing, and I wouldn't be at all surprised. Stone Heart is a well-written gripping story of a boy who falls out of the normality of London life into a parallel dimension, in an `overlaid' reality of London where statues on the city's buildings have life and, all too often, malicious intent. Accompanied by a girl with unusual flash-back powers who perpetually inhabits this other-London with its malevolent undercurrent, George struggles to battle against the gargoyles, dragons and other `taints'. The book runs at a fast pace throughout, reminding me of Brown's:The Da Vinci Code with its rapid story line and twists and turns as the characters solve a riddle to find the Stone Heart. As time ticks down for George, a varied range of characters are increasingly developed, helping both the children and the reader understand better the deep dark forces at work. Grounded in the actual geography of London, and including an attractive map with the key statues and places highlighted, I fully expect to see groups of tourists following the Stone Heart trail in years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will never look at a statue in the same way again!, 22 Oct 2006
By Tubby "biguy26uk" (London, England) - See all my reviews
When George accidentally decapitates a seemingly bland stone statue he is suddenly plunged into a world like no other. George finds himself on the run from the Taints, statues made without love, who now seek brutal revenge for the destruction of one of their kind. George finds safety in the company of a statue called The Gunner. The Gunner is a Spit and Spits are statues whose human makers have created them out of love and purpose.

But as The Gunner defends George so an ancient rivalry between the Spits and the Taints begins to re-surface. George, The Gunner and a special girl called Edie, who can also see the moving statues (unlike everyone else,) set out to help George make recompense for his destruction of the stone statue by finding the Stone Heart.

This book is full of wonderful prose and characters. The Gunner is my particular favourite though there are several more. The real skill of Fletcher is to make this alternate world so believable and enchanting, let alone basing it upon the real statues that litter the London streets so cleverly. Fletcher is also able to create a palpable sense of atmosphere and his experience in film scripting has no doubt helped him in creating cinematic set pieces.

This book is a fantastic read and I can not wait for the sequel - you will love it, unless of course you have a stone heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, with characters you care about., 21 May 2006
Superb storytelling. Set in a fully formed 'parallel London', there is a sense of dark menace and unknown ancient power about to harm the two main characters, pervading the whole book. You really care about the main protagonists, and as readers we lurch from one threat to another with them; beside them almost. If you crossed C.J. Samson with Philip Pullman, thats what you have here. This can't be a debut novel, the writing is too skilled, emotionally rich and detailed. Can't wait for his next book.
