Product Description

Product Description

Multi-award winning spirituality writer Philip Yancey is loved throughout the world for his honest, insightful and inspirational writing. PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? carries all the hallmarks of classic Yancey, a journalist by training. His quest to unravel the mysteries of prayer reads as the journal of a fellow traveller: questioning, challenging, lamenting the unexplainable and rejoicing in the discovery of awesome insights. His journey is beautifully illustrated with moving true stories drawn from around the world.

PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? tackles the following questions: What is prayer? What difference does it make? Why and how should we pray? What about unanswered prayer? How should we understand prayer for physical healing?

Focusing on such a universal theme, this is potentially Yancey's biggest book yet. To date, his books have sold over 14 million copies, and have been translated into 25 languages. His first book with Hodder, SOUL SURVIVOR, sold over 90,000 copies in just five years.

5.0 out of 5 stars The long journey into prayer, 11 Mar 2007
By Yossarian (London) - See all my reviews
Yancey is, as always, concise and honest. Honesty is one of the trademarks of Yancey's writing, and you need a fair chunk of that when researching prayer. He acknowledges it's hard for most of us to pray, my favourite line: 'It's more important to God that you 'show up' than what you actually pray'.

In my long journey into prayer, this book helped me feel more 'normal'. He deals with all the problems I face. Very encouraging, made me want to keep on going.

5.0 out of 5 stars The questions we all wanted answered., 29 Aug 2006
By Mr. Gary L. Youens "Gary Youens" (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews

Philip Yancey is a master at his work. Never does he offer a neat solution, but instead something more valuable; honest, sincere and real life reference. Pray is a language that not one of us is fluent, yet as father longs to hear the babbles of his new born child, so God is delighted that we approach with our requests. We might seldom get what we desires, however, we will get something much more valuable: God Himself. This is a book for those who wonder 'why bother praying?'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Yancey, 25 Jul 2007
By Geoffrey Turner "listener" (West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've appreciated other books by Philip Yancey - especially "Disappointed With God" and "The Jesus I Never Knew" because he didn't duck the awkward questions but asked them and tried honestly to answer them. With this volume, he doesn't address some of the really difficult questions about prayer (human freewill; response to some prayers but not others)and in his answers to the questions he does ask, he drops into "standard response" mode - platitudes that don't offer the answers - if they did, we wouldn't need a book like this. Good as far as it goes but that's all - I got more from a brief essay by CS Lewis in an Appendix to "Miracles" - On "Special Providences" that offers a very short but clear and logical discussion of prayer
