Product Description

This one-day course is specifically written for the holiday maker for whom a short holiday does not justify a complete language course. It comes on one 75-minute CD and teaches only basic, core words, as few as the holiday maker can get away with, and a few useful phrases, which will be supported by body language. It comes with an 8-page booklet which simply lists the words and phrases taught on the recording - no pronunciation guide, no grammar summary, just a written record of what has been learned.The action takes place during a flight from London to Germany. Following a challenge from the passenger in the next seat to her, Elisabeth Smith teaches him enough German to be able to get around on his holiday. The dialogue is broken up by in-flight announcements, meals and drinks being served and even some turbulence.The course is fast and light-hearted and reflects the anticipation and excitement of going on holiday.


About the Author

Elisabeth Smith is German and has taught French, German and Spanish at different levels for more than 30 years. She now lives in London and Marbella, where she still teaches and develops her ground-breaking language courses.

I think this is a good idea. The mind mapping employed in the CD is a brilliant idea, but the 'dodgy' humour lets it down at times e.g. "Poo ine - just don't step in it". Laddish humour perhaps, but not the mindset to have when learning a new language with the aim of using it. The phrases at the start of the booklet are tremendously useful, as is the repetition of certain phrases throughout the book - this helps to send the message home. The pronunciation pointers are also helpful. The 'dictionary' at the end of the booklet has the right idea, but the pronunciations (Greeklish) aren't provided, so they more or less become redundant.

The main criticism I have of this product is how restrictive it is. For the tourist with little or no interest in another culture, the phrases provided might well be sufficient, being limited to how to 'get' stuff. It provides no help in conversational words/topics and reactions (only 4 reactions are actually provided).

Also, the differences in words used in CD and booklet are confusing. For example, the CD translates "Excuse me" as "Signomi"; in the booklet, it's "Me sighorite". This becomes rapidly annoying when several such variances are discovered.

The book also falls down where it bizarrely infers that English cooking is healthier than Greek; again, I fear the target market is too narrow to broaden its appeal to those interested in a different culture.

I think the material can be covered in 3 or 4 days perhaps - a single day is simply not enough for a language as complex as Greek so the title is perhaps a tad ambitious.

All in all, it's fair. Not great, but fair.

This product is 'okay' I must admit that I can't really see this being of any real use for language speaking. I suppose if you are asked on Friday by your boss to fly out on Monday morning to Germany and you really want to be able to say a few words, it's okay.

I would suggest the Michel Thomas range for getting you speaking much more effectively.

This is quite a helpful aid to getting a background in spoken Greek. But it requires more concentration than one can give listening to the CD whilst driving a car; and so it doesn't quite live up to the promise to teach yourself in one day. Having said that, after listening during car journey for a couple of weeks I found that I had indeed retained much of what I had heard.
