This is a beautifully written and deeply involving account of Ken Dornstein's brother, his death in the Lockerbie plane crash and Ken's personal journey to come to terms with his death and also capture David's spirit and life.

The narrative is cleverly constructed, part memoir, part biography and part eulogy. David Dornstein is revealed to be a gifted writer, whom Ken reconstructs through his own memories, David's notebooks and the memories of others.

Interwined with the story of David's life, a fascinating potrait of a clearly troubled young writer who had premonitions of only becoming famous through dying young, is the story of Ken's struggle to deal with the loss of his brother and his attempts to rebuild his own life.

A highly unusual and compelling read - would recommend it to anyone as a fascinating piece of writing as well as a deeply moving story.

i am in awe of the writing and conception of this book. It is very simple. And true. A man loses a brother in an air-crash. He loved and admired him. He cannot believe he has lost him.
He goes in search of him to Lockerbie where he eventually finds the police record of the recovery of his brother's body. That done, he goes to meet two of his late brother's girl-friends. One thing leads to another and he has affairs with both of them. He almost tries to become his dead brother.
I will let you discover the rest. Suffice to say, this is the most moving book on grief I have ever read. It dwarfs Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking."
A great accomplishment and a very moving,wonderfully well-written book. I cannot recommend it too highly.
