Product Description

Product Description

Tom Cruise is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's biggest stars and of the most powerful actors of his generation. He became a star in his first film, Risky Business, before he was 21. His later career has seen a stellar rise to fame, through films such as Top Gun, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire and Mission Impossible, to the point that he is the only man in Hollywood who can 'open' a movie. But he is equally well known for his rocky personal life and most lately, his controversial attachment to Scientology. And it has lately seemed, with his highly-publicized on- and off-screen romances, that the divide between screen and real life has become increasingly narrow. In this book, the first biography in twelve years, acclaimed film criticIain Johnstone tells the story of both the man and his work. This is the inside story of the making of Tom Cruise the Hollywood legend, his extraordinary achievements and how Tom's onscreen life is formed by his personal experiences - or is it the other way around? This is a pacey, entertaining and insightful biography of one of the most iconic stars of our day.

About the Author

Iain is the author of eight previous books, was film critic for the Sunday Times for seven years and has worked with a number of the major stars and directors in Hollywood, including Steven Spielberg on WAR OF THE WORLDS.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT by Andrew Morton!, 13 Feb 2008
Be warned that if you're after the much publicised new unauthorised biography of Tom Cruise by Andrew Morton - THIS ISN'T IT. I searched 'Andrew Morton' and this book was the top result delivered by Amazon. I bought it instantly - not bothering to check the author's name. The book arrived and, of course, isn't by Andrew Morton at all. I have since returned this book and ordered Morton's from the US site. Very misleading by Amazon UK and, I think, pretty opportunistic and cynical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Narration of how Tom Cruise mastered the World's Stage, 26 Oct 2008
I am waiting for the man himself to write an autobiography of his fantastic life but until its released I settled for reading this autobiography by Ian Johnstone.

This book has done very well in covering Tom and his life from being a small kid who had such an unsettled time in his youth to insights into how he prepares and dedicates himself to every character he plays in his films.

Pretty much most of you will think about how it covers his belief in Scientology and for me Mr Johnstone covers them very well from an OBJECTIVE point of view (unlike the media hunt that is so biased), you will understand how and possibly why Tom got into the religion.

It baffles me how and why Tom Cruise hasn't won an Oscar because he is a ridiculously talented, dedicated human being and not just an Actor. He's must be pretty close to being a billionnaire and he hasn't become wealthy by chance as you will realise from reading this book.

Ian Johnstone has done his research well and has written this book very well. Its worth reading, and Tom Cruise will always be the greatest actor I have ever seen.
