Review

"the perfect way to get to grips with the great historical events." (The History Channel )

Product Description

The Teach Yourself History series offers an alternative to academic historical books, its content being extensive yet extremely accessible and the approach refreshingly different.

The books are informative and compelling, and engage the reader from beginning to end. They assume no prior historical knowledge, and are full of anecdotes and details that provide a very personal appeal.

Teach Yourself The Cold War provides a fascinating insight into this complicated and hidden conflict, from how it began to the main characters involved and the culture it created.

It will help you understand how the super powers grew and vied for dominance, and how the balance was lost. It covers all the important aspects of the war, from what JFK and his assassin had in common to discussing whether the tension ended after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Give yourself the opportunity to understand the global reach of this 45-year-long war, which shaped the latter half of the twentieth century.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book, 1 Dec 2004
By M Bukhari (Edgware, London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I didn't know much about the cold war until I read this amazing book! It is presented in a very clear and concise manner which keeps you reading on and on. I recommend this book to those who do not know much about the history of the 20th century in terms of the battle between the U.S. and Soviet Russia. Simply brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well presented., 5 April 2009
By Jonathan (The Bitter North) - See all my reviews
As someone who didn't enjoy school history, this series of books is helping to fill the many gaps I have. An historian would probably not care for the superficial nature, but it's great for me; someone who wants to know enough to understand what happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect starting point for the Cold War scholar and layman alike, 8 Feb 2008
As part of the "Teach Yourself" range, this is yet another well-researched and comprehensive guide to what is a very complex subject.

Jones has provided an excellent overview of the events of the period known as the Cold War, without compromising on coverage of the wider causes of events in that period, their implications and interpretations. The book is split into manageable sections including an introduction presenting the key tenets of the conflicting ideologies, policies adopted by the various leaders involved, repercussions of the ideological conflict on the Middle East, Far East and Latin America, "détente" and its breakdown, the collapse of the USSR and also a brief section on the cultural effects of the Cold War. A particularly good technique which Jones employs is to include a brief paragraph at the beginning of each section which gives examples of how ordinary people were affected by the unfolding events, thus providing a human element to the historical story and avoiding any account becoming too dry. One small point which I found confusing was the order in which the events are explained - the author tracks back to look at concurrent situations, and covers some events in more depth which were glanced over in previous sections. The result is that you may need to flick back and forth between sections to fully understand the significance and timeline of events. This is, however, a small point, and I found that it actually aided understanding of the interconnectivity of events which was a key characteristic of the Cold War era.

This is a thought-provoking introduction for the complete beginner (like me) and it would also serve as a useful summary for readers already familiar with the events.
