Product Description

Review

"the perfect way to get to grips with the great historical events." (The History Channel )

Product Description

The Teach Yourself History series offers an alternative to academic historical books, its content being extensive yet extremely accessible and the approach refreshingly different.

The books are informative and compelling, and engage the reader from beginning to end. They assume no prior historical knowledge, and are full of anecdotes and details that provide a very personal appeal.

Teach Yourself The Second World War is an accessible introduction to one of the most important, tragic and costly events in history. Some 55 million people died in the conflict, which devastated much of Europe and Asia and had huge consequences for the second half of the 20th century.

This book will help you to understand how one of the most important events in history developed, charting the main military campaigns, and examining the path to Allied victory and its impact on the countries involved.

Learn about the main characters involved in the Second World War, the actions and decisions that were taken, the resulting consequences and the reasons behind the final outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling introduction, 19 May 2005
By A Customer
This book reads like a science fiction thriller, you couldn't make this up. I was new to most of this and it was a really moving page-turning experience to finally acquaint myself with the events of 60 years ago. Very economically written, with a strong sense of the chaotic and serendipitous nature of the allied victory, this is a vivid snapshot of a world of horror.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top up History, 17 Sep 2007
My knowledge of the Second World War was at best scattered, but with this fantastic introduction i now have an overall concept. It it written in plain English with good introductions at each chapter and finishing with a conclusion. I bought this book after i watched 'Flags of our Fathers', i wanted to understand Japan's role in the war. Good solid book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction, 17 Jul 2007

A fantastic introduction that deals with the origins and consequences as well as the war itself. The book is split into small sections and is easy to dip into. Maps add to the digestibility.

I must concur with the previous reviewer - it is a page turner.
