Review
FOR THE FILM: 'Morrison displays terrific restraint when dealing with big themes and perfectly captures the entrenched hostility to all things foreign ... The intelligent script, magical realist flourishes and impressive production design, meanwhile, make this a standout film.' -- The Scotsman 20030813 'a fond study of the relationship between a Jewish family and its Jamaican neighbours in 1960s England.' -- The Independent 20030813 'Bend it like Botham' -- The Independent 20030813 'Clearly resembles Billy Elliot - another tale of a young boy profoundly at odds with his surroundings.' -- Edinburgh Film Festival 20030813 'A cricketing Billy Elliot aims to hit British fim audiences for six.' -- Sunday Telegraph 20030813

5.0 out of 5 stars Woundrous Book, 25 Jul 2004
By A. Parsons (Helsinki, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I ordered this book I didn't know it was written for children. I had wanted to see the film having heared some excellent things about it, but in Finland films about cricket tend not to get shown, although 'Bend it like Beckham' (with which this has inevitably been compared) was shown here. I was not put off that it was a childrens book, even though I had read the first Harry Potter book and been disappointed by it's extremely childish character (I expected more after all the hype about it being marketed seperately for grown ups etc.), but I digress. The book is well written, with good believable characters that develope as the book progresses. The author writes in an easy flowing style, which is never condescending. The historical period is well chosen and there are excellent paralells drawn between the european Jewish family desperately trying to be accepted and the West Indian family newly discovering how intolerant europeans can be. There's real depth to the story and the characters in this book, and several times I had to bouble check that it really was written for children. Of course the theme is that of sport (in this case cricket) bringing people together, and unlike in 'Bend it like Beckham', when the central character, David, has to make a decision between his friends and personal glory with his team there's no cop out (oh why don't you do both), David is forced to choose. The decision ultimately is straightforward though. I suppose what makes this story so much more superior is that it's not about personal ambition, but about interpersonal and intercomunity relationships. This book deserves the five stars I've given it and I will be encouraging my children to read it when thy're a bit older.
