"An excellent new range which deserves to be supported by retail." (The Bookseller )

"a very good place to start."

(Spanish Magazine )

Product Description

This one-day course is specifically written for the holiday maker for whom a short holiday does not justify a complete language course. It comes on one 75-minute CD and teaches only basic, core words, as few as the holiday maker can get away with, and a few useful phrases, which will be supported by body language. It comes with an 8-page booklet which simply lists the words and phrases taught on the recording - no pronunciation guide, no grammar summary, just a written record of what has been learned.

The action takes place during a flight from London to Spain. Following a challenge from the passenger in the next seat to her, Elisabeth Smith teaches him enough Spanish to be able to get around on his holiday. The dialogue is broken up by in-flight announcements, meals and drinks being served and even some turbulence.

The course is fast and light-hearted and reflects the anticipation and excitement of going on holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good way to start; you can use it in the car., 22 May 2006

This is the best introductory language guide I have tried. It covers a few simple phrases and teaches just 50 words*. You do not need to read the booklet to follow the course, though it is worth doing that to link written words to sounds. The only bad part is the humour of "Andy Johnson" who is the pupil in the dialogue.

* I think the total words exceeds the 50 claimed.

INSTANT SPANISH (also Elizabeth Smith) is also excellent. A good follow up to this.

(Both are "get by in Spanish" rather than GCSE/Grammar books. Both might be good supplements for GCSE students; they would make learning more fun).

Ms. Smith speaks her English with a slight German accent , here and there . I assume that her Spanish is equally sprinkled with German sounds .
We are a fly-on-the-wall , while she teaches this rather average student .
The ludicrous scenario is that they are on a flight to Spain .
While these gimmicks lighten things up , they do so at the expense of clarity .
How about ..... A rogue alien death-ray hits a Spanish village , having the effect of slowing down everyone's speech , while forcing them to speak very clearly , as well . The ray also has the effect of forcing them to repeat , over and over , basic greetings and requests concerning hotel rooms and street directions .....
