Five troubled young people, derided as "spoons" by many of their contemporaries, find themselves on a residential school trip, where, through a search for a missing skull, they are forced into a new understanding, both of themselves and of the world. As terrifying challenges unfold, including a series of encounters with wild creatures, this disparate group has to face up to all the necessities of acting as a team in order to survive. Support comes from unexpected sources, both from within and from outside the group, and all of them discover new inner strengths and talents which sustain them in adversity.
While the concept of different time dimensions is not an original one, the author manages to engage the reader in this absorbing adventure story. A sense of ancient mysteries pervades the writing and the reader feels sympathy for the initially unhappy protagonists who are forced to confront, not only their prejudices about one another but new ideas about the nature of time and space. The style is very accessible and the lively dialogue laced with humour will appeal to many readers, while the ending is compassionate and optimistic without being sentimental. This is a novel which would provoke much useful discussion among KS3 students, both in the classroom and within a smaller book-group concept.

A gripping adventure story. Five 'misfit' children from a city school are excited to be going on a week's field study trip in the West Country. However, the trip will change them as persons, and take them further than they could ever have imagined. A clever fantasy drama woven around the concepts of time and space in physics, and a 'networking' technique.
