5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Book!, 6 Feb 2003
By Mr A J Vickers (Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Well i must say this has got to be one of the best music theory books i have ever purchased. The book is laid out nicely, with interesting diagrams and text. The stages are set out very clearly and are very easy to follow with practical, listening and written exercises written throughout the chapters for you to do. With the added addition of a Audio cd the book is easier to follow and greatly enchances the learning of music theory. The book covers all the basics and gradually gets onto more advanced learning as you progress through the book
So far ive found this book has taught me better than my tutor!
I have ordered many other theory books but in my opinion this one is by far the best. If your thinking of getting a music theory book there is no question! GET THIS ONE!

2.0 out of 5 stars Would be good under a different title, 19 Sep 2003
By Film Fan (London) - See all my reviews
This is a poorly named book - a better title would have been "Teach Yourself Music Notation". Most of the content is about notation of staff music, with very little to do with how these can used over and above the most trivial examples.

If you are interested in being able to communicate with other musicians but not interested in reading/writing staff music, 50% of this book can go straight in the bin. ...which is possibly where the Locrian mode went, because it bizarrely fails to make an appearance anywhere in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atlas, a music theory book that really helps you get it!!!, 20 Feb 2004
This is the best music theory I've come across. It easy to understand because the information is explained very well and to the point. Another great thing about this book is that it gives the answers to the exercises in each section, so that you can check that you're learning correctly.
A must for anyone wishing to learn music theory from scratch.
