4.0 out of 5 stars A good book if you want to get good at go, 2 Jul 2006
By Owen Jones (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are many books which offer a basic introduction to go, getting the reader to the level where they can play sensible games and have some idea what is going on. This book goes a lot further than that. In each area it explains some of the slightly more advanced concepts. I really liked its structured layout and there is plenty here to justify rereading. There are problems at the end of each chapter (with solutions) which help you see if you've understood. The author has avoided all but a few japanese terms which really helps make it easily understandable.

For the reader that knows they want to dedicate a certain amount of effort, this is a great book. Also it suits the reader that already has some grasp of the rules and how to play but wants to go further. If you have no experience of go then I would say only get this book if you are willing to put a certain amount of effort in. There are much easier books which will get you to a level where you can play games.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best beginner's book on Go currently available at a sensible price in UK, 24 Oct 2009
By Scott Marshall (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the best beginner's book on Go I have found, with the big advantage of being readily available at a sensible price. There are many highly-revered Go books by well-respected Japanese/Chinese 9-dan Go masters, but they can be hard to find, and (from my experience reading some of them as a Go novice), not really suited to the complete beginner.

Matthews' book on the other hand ticks all the right boxes. It is well-paced and easy to read. Topics are carefully introduced and explained, then backed-up with examples and exercises. Superficially similar positions that require quite different moves are pointed out, and the reasons why certain plays are good or bad are thoroughly explained. Where a sequence of moves leads from one type of position/shape to another, the book usefully cross-references these, and the material is carefully ordered to build from the simple to the complex. The book really helps the reader build a solid understanding of Go.

The style is encouraging and motivational; Matthews openly acknowledges the complexities faced by the beginner, and consequent common mistakes made, but continously throws supportive lifelines to guide the reader through the quagmire. Whereas other books I've read adopt a tone of belittling the beginner for not understanding something, Matthews says it's ok, everyone makes that mistake, don't worry. A bit superficial perhaps, but the positive tone keeps the book interesting and helps forward progress.

Perhaps the best way to learn Go is actually to play it, against a sympathetic, more experienced opponent. But in between games, this book is the next best thing; for me personally, it has helped me understand where I went wrong in the last game I played, and (to the chagrin of my 'more experienced opponent') given many pointers on how to play better in my next game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Play away from thickness, 7 Mar 2009
This book is well set out and easy to follow. With problems at the end of each chapter that help cement the learning which has taken place over the chapter. Also the chapters that went through teaching games were very insightful. As a beginner I found it very useful as it covers the basics but goes beyond them giving you the scope to continue to strengthen your game.
