Teach Yourself Xhosa is intended for all who are interested in learning one of the most widely spoken languages in South Africa. It is aimed at both South Africans and visitors to South Africa and those who are learning Xhosa from scratch, as well as those who want to brush up their existing skills.
Wherever possible, the communicative aspect of the language has been emphasised to give you a course which is useful and practical. Cultural background and information forms an integral part of the course and will help you get the most out of a visit to South Africa.
The book is divided into 16 units which range from basic functions and language usage in the initial units to a more varied and complex usage in the later units.
Material from Xhosa literature and magazines will broaden the range of your language and will give you the confidence to go beyond the pages of the book.
The book (0 340 87111 3) is accompanied by audio material on two cassettes (0 340 87113 X) or CDs (0 340 91391 6) which are available separately or together with the book in packs (book/cassette pack: 0 340 87112 1; book/CD pack: 0 340 91390 8).

About the Author
Beverley Kirsch has taught Xhosa at the medical schools of the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch as well as at various multinational companies and various other institutions.
Silvia Skorge, linguist, was Associate Professor in the Department of German at the University of the Western Cape and has been involved in producing textbooks in several other languages.
Sindiwe Magona, one of South Africa's well-known contemporary authors, taught Xhosa at school and university level until she took up a position at the United Nations in New York in the 1980s.
Their collaboration spans more than 25 years.
