Product Description
This book/CD pack is a complete course in Panjabi, designed for the absolute beginner who may or may not have studied a language before. The course will be useful to people who want to learn Panjabi in order to speak with their Panjabi friends and relatives, to communicate with Panjabi communities in relation to their work, to learn about aspects of Panjabi culture and society or to travel to the Panjab itself. The course will also be useful to those who already know a little Panjabi but who may not have the confidence to speak, or to those who are fluent but need to learn to read and write the Gurmukhi script. The course is divided into two parts: - the first part (units 1-10) is specifically designed for those who want to learn the basics of grammar and vocabulary in order to be able to communicate in a simple manner and to read and write simple sentences. - the second part (units 11-16) will help you expand your knowledge of spoken Panjabi further and become proficient in the Gurmukhi script. Overall, the course introduces you to a wide range of vocabulary and covers the basic grammar of Panjabi.By the end of the course, you will be able to understand the spoken language to communicate in Panjabi in a number of everyday situations and also have a level of understanding of the written language to begin to read newspapers and write letters. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not easy to use, difficult to navigate between book and cas', 25 Nov 2001
The combination of book and cassette does not work in this case. It is very difficult to match your place in the book, and the cassette. The book in the first chapter tries to explain too much and does build step by step, but just throws the information at you at fast rate. I was disappointed with the cassette, I was hoping to use it in the car. The cassette can not be used with out the book, and does not lend itself for learning conversation. An example of this is when you are introduced to the numbers up to 20, you are told the numbers once, there isn't a pause after the numbers so you do not have time to repeat them. Then you are straight on to another subject. All 20 numbers are said in about 20 seconds.

2.0 out of 5 stars not that easy, 3 Jan 2003
The book is certainly comprehensive, and perhaps that is the problem - it was too much with the tapes not being linked very well with the text, and far too much emphasis on written panjabi, with later lessons being written in the panjabi script; and for someone just wishing to get a basic grasp of the language is far too complicated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very good, 16 Feb 2006
By jana hanson (London, UK) - See all my reviews
It looks like this course was initially written by someone who knows the language and then reworked by someone who does not. It is not consistent, there are overlaps, and contradictions. It is very difficult to follow and has left me with too many unanswered questions. I am now using another book, actually two other courses. I would not recommend this course to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars There is much better
The text and the tapes do not go well together. Worse, there is no progression in the teaching of the language. It is all disconnected chunks and there may be some mistakes. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Panjabi course
Well written (both the English and the Panjabi), and does not assume any prior knowledge. I would certainly recommend this book.
