5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches Everything An Amateur Should Know, 11 May 2004
By A Customer
I have been keen on photography for many years. Having gone from a normal 35mm compact, to digital and shortly to a 35mm SLR, despite my years of interest all my experiences with cameras have been trial and error. I have managed to produce some great results, but only by chance.

I decided it was time to learn about what I have become so interested in and checked out various "beginners" books. This one stood out. It covers everything you could ever want to and should ever know about cameras and photography skills. Terminology is explained, as are the various features of a camera and photography techniques, in an easy to understand, non-patronising format.

Throughout the book there are sample pictures with clear captions, making it even easier to understand what Lee Frost has explained in the main text.

I already feel more competent with the camera and I have only just started to actually study the book! Even some of the simplest things explained in this book stay in your mind the next time you pick up a camera.

In my opinion an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to really understand the fantastic world of photography!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Book, 15 Sep 2004
By A Customer
It took me quite a while to find a book like this as all the other books on photography seem to be geared either towards education (IE GCSE course book) or otherwise if you look at any book with "Digital" in their title then they are all about Photoshop and not about taking pictures.

This book is simply about taking pictures. It assumes little about what camera you use (Digital or Film), although people with higher end compact (eg Canon G5) and entry level SLRs (eg Nikon D70) would get most out of the book as it goes through the features you can play with on those cameras.

As this is not an educational "Text Book" you wont see a description of how light goes through a lens or what are things like chromatic distortion and barrel distortion are, and by removing such background coverage it makes the book immediately more readable.

It covers various situations in enough detail to allow you to understand how to get a better shot, or how to tweak the settings to get a more interesting shot eg by changing the depth of field, or choosing a different shooting position.

The main situations I have found useful are: Night time photography, Portraiture and Photographing Children and Babies, the latter being the most important to me as I have just recently had my first child.

All in all a good book especially if you don't want to know how light goes through a lens and if you prefer to take a good shot in the first place rather then digitally retouch it afterwards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy book if you're just starting out, 18 Aug 2005
By S. Jennings "shell10313" (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book to read just before I started a short college course as I wanted to get a basic grasp of photography and how to operate an SLR camera, and I found it very useful. It takes you through the basic functions and concepts in an easy-to-understand way, then goes on to explore different types of photography, and has a brief section on developing.

This is a very useful book if you're just getting started but aren't sure quite where to start. However, once you've got the hang of the basics, you'll find yourself wanting something a bit more in-depth. But this is a good place to start!

This is a good solid introduction to photography although most books deal nowadays with just digital photography and this seems to include everything.
