Product Description

Product Description

We are all born with a talent for story-telling. Few people, though, have an instinctive understanding of how to develop their ideas into novels. In TEACH YOURSELF WRITING CRIME FICTION, Lesley Grant-Adamson encourages you to explore the ideas you already have, and gets you working step by step on your own work. This book analyses the elements of the broad crime fiction genre, covering the classic detective story, the espionage thriller, comic crime fiction, romantic suspense, the feminist sleuth and more. Grant-Adamson guides you through the process of crafting your material: - recognising an idea for a novel - setting the scene - shaping your characters - evolving plot - researching your background - maintaining style and using literary techniques - finding a way out if you get stuck! This practical book also includes advice on presenting your work to a publisher and enjoying your new role as a published crime writer. Whether you are a novice or already established, TEACH YOURSELF WRITING CRIME FICTION shows you how to find your voice as a crime writer, without cramping your style.

About the Author

LESLEY GRANT-ADAMSON has published eleven novels and has taught creative writing at university level, as well as for writers' groups, residential courses and prisons - both in the UK and overseas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the How To Write books, 26 Feb 2004
By ann grant (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
The BBC called this book the best one about learning to write any kind of fiction, and it's true. Even if you're not going to write crime fiction it's worth it because it isn't just tips and rules, it's all about the way the writer's mind works and how to evolve your own ideas into a crime novel. The big difference is that the way she's written it, you are starting the writing process from wherever you are instead of some ideal place. Although this is the second edition I think the book gets a bit overlooked in shops because it is published by an educational publisher and so you don't see it displayed as much as others. A real pity because there is so much more to be learned from it. She is a really witty writer, too, so it's a very easy read. And unlike other books on crime fiction this is bang up to date so what you learn helps you to understand how to write crime fiction that will sell today. Oh, and her own books are brilliant. She has written all kinds of crime fiction so she really knows what she's talking about.
