Product Description

Product Description

Romanian, because of its Latin origin and the fact that it has borrowed words from other Romance languages, will be recognisable to anyone who knows French or Italian. This course introduces both colloquial and written forms of Romanian. The emphasis is on learning to use Romanian in a variety of situations. No knowledge of grammatical terminology is assumed but traditional grammatical terms are included for those who are familiar with them. Most of the 2,000 words introduced in the course are those frequently used in everyday conversation, and many of the vocabulary items are listed in the Romanian-English and English-Romanian vocabularies at the end of the book. The 20 carefully graded units of dialogues, culture notes, grammar and exercises give you all you need to be able to cope with a whole range of situations and participate fully and confidently in all aspects of Romanian life. The page design has been improved and sections headings are given in English to make it easier for you to learn Romanian without a teacher. The accompanying cassette has been recorded by native speakers and gives 70 minutes of listening practice. The cassette is available separately (0 340 86854 6) or in a pack with the book (0 340 86852 X).

4.0 out of 5 stars An introductory book that you'll use again and again., 8 May 2002
By Morven Fyfe (North Herts, England) - See all my reviews
This book offers the reader all the grammar they'll need to know to get to grips with the language. Everything is explained simply, thank goodness, and the topics and typical conversations normally found in a Romanian environment are authentic, just as they would be in Romania. Only one criticism, more exercises would have been helpful for the learner. Don't get the book though without the cassette, as pronunciation for us English speakers takes a bit of practice. Well done Dennis Deletant and Yvonne Alexandrescu, now all you need to do is write a travel dictionary you can get into your back pocket!

4.0 out of 5 stars This book was extremely helpful in my attempt to learn., 8 Jan 1999
By A Customer
I lived in Romanina for almost 1 year and the book was a terrific addition to my studies of the language. It provided practical things to practice as I walked the streets daily and shopped in the piatas. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn this language. The only thing that I wish it would have had, was a more complete and extensive verb conjugation list at the end of the book. The book had little self-quizes at the end of each chapter that were very helpful. The chapters were organized very well, containing connected information that was not too much to take in for 1 chapter. If you are determined to learn, this book is a great tool. For a language that is not commonly attempted, this book was more than I expected. Of course it is grammatically correct and the people are not, so the language on the streets varies from the book in areas of numbers and some verbs. All around it was great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners; only deals with pronunciation on 2 pages, 9 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The subtitle is "A complete guide for beginners". It's not. Out of 244 pages, only 2 deal at all with pronunciation - one has general rules for vowel sounds, the other consonant sounds. There is a companion audio cassette, but it wasn't mentioned in the ad as a separate item. At the price, it should have been included. Anyway, the Berlitz phrase book -- at less than half the price -- is much more useful for the traveler and for anyone just starting out in the language.
