Product Description

Product Description

This classic by Brian Phythian has been fully updated and simplified to make it accessible and relevant to today's readers.

Never has the ability to express yourself well - in job interviews and presentations as well as in the writing of letters and reports - been more important. This book will help you to improve your ability to express yourself clearly and correctly in both spoken and written English.

Part One concentrates on the meanings and functions of words and shows how they fit in and work within the rules of grammar, punctutation and spelling. Three chapters show you how to avoid common errors and another chapter gives you words whose meanings are often confused.

Part Two starts with a discussion of synonyms and choosing words. There is an analysis of how English is used in a wide variety of contexts, ranging from the simple transmission of factual material (including journalism and advertising) to the sophisticated use of language in creative writing. There are suggestions on the styles and techniques of narrative descriptive and discursive writing, with many examples and extracts from published writing, and advice on the writing of essays, summaries and reports.

About the Author

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware revisions of Phythians classic work!, 20 May 2004
By THOMAS CALLAGHAN (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I bought this book, hoping for some useful minor updates on the 1998 version I had borrowed from my local library. No! Albert Rowe has severely damaged its contents, structure and style.

This edition is still worth three stars in its own right: abridging certain subjects and simplifying parts of the original makes this a decent grammar and usage guide for basic English teaching, but Rowe has axed over 100 pages, including two brilliant chapters on grammatical rules, and style. He has added unnecessary school-textbook-style exercises and has even done away with the index.

The late Brian Phythian's traditional approach to 'correct' and 'proper' English may not sit well with today's socio-linguists (who advocate only 'Standard' and 'non-Standard' English, i.e. both being of equal validity, with no value-labels attached), but this adds a flavour and personal touch to what can be a dry subject.

Phythian's original 1985 'Teach Yourself Good English' (reissued in 1988 as '... Correct English') is a concise, wide-ranging and excellent five-star reference guide. Although not as exhaustive as Longman's guide, nor idiosyncratically detailed as Fowler's, this book is far more accessible and wieldy for the most part. I can highly recommend the original version along with either David Crystal's "Rediscover Grammar" or "Making Sense of Grammar" to add greater detail.

I have returned this version and will be looking for a pre-2000 edition of the book.
