Product Description

Product Description
Teach Yourself German Grammar is an up-to-date introduction to German grammar. You don't need to know a lot about grammar before you start. Everything is explained simply and there are lots of examples to illustrate each point. Unlike more traditional grammars, Teach Yourself German Grammar is structured so that you can look up language forms according to what you want to say, even if you don't know the grammatical term for them. If you already know some grammar, then you can use the 'reference grammar' section at the back of the book to look up the points you need.

The functional grammar consists of 21 units illustrating the various uses to which the language can be put, for example, giving instructions or talking about the recent past. The more traditional reference grammar deals with grammatical structures, such as the imperative or the perfect tense. All grammatical terms are explained in the glossary at the back of the book. Each unit contains exercises for you to practice what you have learnt and there is a key at the back of the book for you to check your answers. The new page design in this edition means that the book is even easier to use and the main headings are now given in English so that you can find your way around the book quickly. This edition contains a 'taking it further' section which will direct you to further sources of real German.

This book will help you to understand and manipulate German grammar with confidence because:
- you need no prior knowledge of grammatical terminology to use it;
- the approach is accessible and supportive;
- the examples are clear and in context;
- exercises help you practise every point;
- the index lists functions and grammatical terms.

This book is part of a series of Teach Yourself Grammars. French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Dutch are also available.

The leader in self-learning with more than 300 titles, covering all subjects.
Be where you want to be with Teach Yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful introduction to German grammar., 15 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This excellent little book is what students of German have been crying out for for years. It acts as an accessible introduction to an otherwise daunting language and is also a great book to refresh your memory if everything has become a little rusty.

If you want to learn German - this is the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact but concise, with a great layout., 15 Aug 2003
Despite being first published back in the mists of time (well, 1986), I have found this grammar book extremely clear and useful.

It is split up into sections of similar, readable length, and uses plenty of examples, using everyday German vocabulary, to illustrate each point exactly. Perhaps I'm just bored or boring, but I found the section on how [High] German is related to English an interesting addition, and, if nothing else, this book certainly furthered my understanding of my mother tongue.

All in all, this is a very thorough book, without being tedious nor jammed with frightening grammatical jargon, and I would reccommend this to anyone wanting to learn and understand German grammar.

2.0 out of 5 stars It has good info, but a little tough to follow, 9 Nov 2008
By Matt (Stourbridge, UK United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
To be honest, I really tried with this book - at first I thought that it was because I was so poor at English grammer (which is true), but then I tried the Michel Thomas method in which his foundation course drills verbs and more verbs - I can understand that, but this confused me.

I have given it two stars though as it is comprehensive and is probably more use to an advanced student.
