Product Description

Product Description

Using both book and CDs, Teach Yourself Thai is the course for anyone who wants to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Thai with confidence.

Although aimed at those with no previous knowledge, it is equally suitable for anyone wishing to brush up existing knowledge or refresh rusty language skills for a holiday or business trip.

Key structures and vocabulary are introduced in 14 thematic units progressing from introducing yourself and dealing with everyday situations to making travel arrangements. The emphasis is on communication throughout with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording.

The book will give you a solid introduction to the Thai writing system, so you can go on to extend your knowledge beyond the book and the recorded material will help you with the pronunciation of this tonal language.

The new edition retains the tried-and-tested structure of the lessons but has been fully updated. New features include an English-Thai vocabulary to go alongside the existing Thai-English vocabulary and a 'taking it further' section directing the reader to further sources of Thai - websites, books, etc. The language notes have been expanded and tightened, the exercises improved and more reading material in Thai script added.

The page design has been improved and section headings given in English to make the course easier to use for the self-access learner.

The accompanying recording has been increased to two CDs amounting to approximately 150 minutes of listening material. The book (0 340 86857 0) and CDs (0 340 86048 0) are also available separately.

Alternatively, the recording is available on a double cassette which can be purchased on its own (0 340 86859 7) or in a pack with the book (0 340 86858 9).

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best available Thai language course., 13 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This is a much improved version of the earlier Teach Yourself Thai. The material can be used either just to learn spoken Thai, or also to learn written thai as well. I have used it as a first step towards just the spoken language, and I am very pleased with my progress. This edition reworks some of the weeker chapters and eliminates many errors. It also adds much more grammar, which is a great improvement. The most irritating aspect of the book is the romanization system: the letter "u" is used for a sound like the letter "a" in English, which takes some getting used to.
I have also looked at, or used, most of the other Thai language courses available. I have concluded that in my opinion this is the best one: it covers a fair amount of vocabulary and grammar, and the topics covered are generally quite useful (except for a dated visit to the post office). Yet it remains both stimulating and fun.
