5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book!, 1 Dec 2005
I thought that this book was great. It covers various aspects of basic jewellery making to give you a insight into how to get started. It has a wonderful array of examples which I personally found very inspiring. I would reccomemed this book to anyone who has a modern approach to jewllery and wants practical information as well as visual inspiration.

4.0 out of 5 stars A manual which informs, explains and inspires., 15 Jan 2001
The authors have combined their skills as designer/makers and teachers to produce a book which covers the basics in an accessible way. It encourages readers to experiment with traditional techniques and modern multimedia approaches to jewellery design and construction. The text is straightforward and uncluttered by too much detail, line diagrams are used effectively where clarification is required. The examples are drawn from a single source - the Edinburgh College of Art - and this could be criticised for a lack inclusivity but the selection is still inspirational and feels achievable to the beginner. The examples are enhanced by the excellent quality of the photographs. The authors offer sensible advice such as attending a short course before investing in any equipment, the basic tools required and how to set up a workshop. There are useful appendices covering suppliers and periodicals. Overall a book which will instill enthusiasm in a beginner (like me) and be a valuable addition to a professional's bookshelf.

1.0 out of 5 stars How to make shabby looking jewellery..., 5 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I purchase this book to see how to make jewellery. Unfortunately this book shows how you can make 'jewellery' out of everyday objects which look like tat you would pick up for 20p at a flea market. In the few examples where precious metals have been used, the designers have conspired to turn 18ct gold and other components into something you would pick up at a flea market for 20p. There isn't a regular circle, curve or straight line in the book. The silver figure brooch is the ultimate example of the low quality work in this book and looks like it has been dropped from a great height onto a rocky outcrop. Very poor. I would recommend the, Jewellery Making Manual by Sylvia Wicks, if you really want to make what most people would take to be jewellery.
