It provides clear explanations and numerous worked examples to guide you to an understanding of essential mathematical concepts and techniques. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good content let down quality control, 6 Sep 2003
By A Customer
My wife has been working through this book.

The binding quickly started to fall apart - it is unsuitable for a study book that has to be held open and fairly flat when doing exercises, for example.

Worse are the errors, most of which could have been picked up by diligent proof reading and somebody properly checking the exercise answers against the questions. It isn't just the odd one or two - there are many.

It's a real shame as the content is pretty good - not perfect, but pretty good - and would have been recommendable had the publisher taken proper care over its production.

This is not good enough in a book intended for self-study.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really not good compared to another, so it fails! , 13 Feb 2008
As my title says compared to other books this just does not cut it. It's small and printed on very cheap paper. In most light the text can be seen on the other side. The explanations are too long winded and the examples are really not the best, it just doesn't get down to the hard facts of explaining the rules and formula of mathematics. Sure it will do if you have the patience and time.

However if you want to learn maths quick, much more clearly and have a book that actually seems worth your £7 then get The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Maths. Yes I understand it is aimed at kids, but that book has TONS more mathematic rules and formula included and is ten times better at explaining it. In nice print and colour. Not long winded just hard fact in a clear manner!

When books like the Usborne math book are around, giving better explanations, better quality and more for your money at the same price, books like the teach yourself mathematics deserve not to be purchased.

(Have a look at a preview of the Usborne book if you doubt me, it's on the Amazon UK site to look inside. Just make sure you order the 2007 edition)

PS: Don't be put off the fact that it's aimed at kids, it really does have more formula and explanations than most adult math books I have seen!

PPS: No I do not work for Usborne, I am just damn sick of these cheap and poor adult education books that insist on being boring, long winded and with barely much explanation's in them!
