Product Description

Product Description

Islam is the world's second largest faith. This book is a comprehensive guide to the faith itself and to Islamic society. Written by a practising Muslim, it looks at all aspects of Islam including: - the life of the Prophet Mohammed - the Qur'an and its revealed teachings - worship in Islam - Shi'ite Islam, Sufism and Islamic mysticism - the history of Islam - the views and status of Muslim sects worldwide - Muslims in Britain. The new edition includes a new introduction, chapters and photographs to bring it entirely up to date. It looks at the attitude of Islam towards other world faiths. The "Teach Yourself World Faiths" series aims to present all the essential information required by a reader who has no previous knowledge of the religion, but who wants to feel confident in dealing with members of the faith community - in terms of their beliefs and attitudes, and also of the practical details of their culture, ceremony, diet and moral views. As such it is relevant to the needs of police, social workers, solicitors, businessmen, teachers and all who require sensitivity and insight in dealing with the public in a multi-faith and multi-ethnic society. "Teach Yourself Islam" is an introduction to the history, beliefs, religious practices and social customs of the Muslim religion. It is suitable for A-level students, as background reading for undergraduate students in Religious Studies, and for the general reader.

About the Author

Sr Ruqaiyyah has worked on local education committees developing syllabi for Religious Studies. She developed a course of study enabling any student without the facilities or teachers at school or college to work for the Islamic Options for the GCSE examination in Religious Studies (EdExcel, London) at home, at school, at madrassah, in prison, in short - anywhere. She has not only made her work and method available to the general public, but also tutors the distance-learning course for the Association of Muslim Researchers (AMR). She has successfully trained many students, with great success, using her course. It involves a use of the first three books on her booklist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Islam, 7 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Islam (World Faiths) (Paperback)
The author of this book treats the reader in a very intelligent and respectful manner. It is an excellent, comprehensive source of information for those wishing to learn more about Islam, from complete novices to those actually wishing to enhance their existing basic knowledge.

As a Muslim myself, never once was I made to feel that I was being patronised for having limited knowledge about my religion. The style adopted is very simplistic and yet an incredible amount of information is delivered in a fashion that makes the reader want to continue reading until the very end.

There exist no airs and graces and not a hint of fundamentalism which is all too often wrongly associated with this faith.

At times a very delicate twist of humour is woven in to the book just to remind the reader that the work is written by a person and not just a descriptive piece of facts and figures that could be churned out by a machine.

The author's gentleness and depth of character also appears to materialise as one works though this book. There seems to exist a genuine love for the reader and a desire to put across all the necessary information but in a way that allows the reader to discover the faith and at the same time forms his/her own opinions about Islam.

Such was its overall effect that it leaves the reader thirsty for more of an insight into this author's wonderful literature.

A thoroughly good read!
