Product Description

Product Description
Astronomy is still one of the few sciences where the amateur can play a useful role and may even make important discoveries. "Teach Yourself Astronomy" is the ideal book for someone who would like to take a real interest in astronomy, but does not know where to start. No previous knowledge is assumed, and the reader is guided through the basics of this science, helped by diagrams throughout the text. The book includes how to observe the sun, moon, planets, and other bodies such as comets. It covers the basic facts and a straightforward introduction to Cosmology. It also explains what you can see with the naked eye and inexpensive equipment. Written by the world's most popular astronomer, this book benefits greatly from his superior knowledge and experience in the field, and also includes a selection of photographs from his private collection.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Past President of the British Astronomical Association and a member of the international Astronomical Union. He has written a number of books, and since 1957 has presented the BBC television programme 'The Sky at Night' every four weeks. He was knighted in 2001, and made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society also in 2001.

I only had a passing interest in Astronomy before I read this book. Patrick makes the firs few steps into the world of astronomy as painless as possible. I couldn't put the book down, I finished it the same day and have been over it a couple of times since....

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining reading, 24 April 2002
I picked this book at random because I wanted a book that would tell me the basics about astronomy without all the technical jargon to confuse things. I was impressed. The only thing wrong with it was the poor standard of editing. There were numerous spelling mistakes and this meant that I had to reread certain passages to make sure I had got the meaning correct. That aside thought, I would definately recommen this book to anyone with an interest in the sky at night.
