4.0 out of 5 stars A really good introduction, 19 Mar 2002
By K. Street (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Unlike many books on speed reading, this avoids annoying case studies (Jane had been a slow reader all her life, only able to manage 3 words a minute, until she attended one of my classes, whereupon she learnt to read War and Peace in its entirity in under 90 seconds) and concentrates on useful techniques and advice for the real world. After all, it's no good being able to read an Art History text book in record time if you actually need to be able to read scientific journal articles. It also contains advice for preparing for meetings, tips for reading from computer screens, some interesting facts about memory, simple relaxation exercises to reduce stress and put you in the right state for reading and lots of other useful bits and pieces. My only critism is that it could actually use more examples of speed reading techniques! But, if you practice the methods outlined in this book you will definitely see an improvement in your reading speed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Won't make you a faster reader, but will make you a more efficient one, 9 May 2007
By M. McManus - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Upon buying this book, I was under the impression that I would be able to read a novel in my tea break by the time I'd read it. This is not the case: the book does not make you a faster reader. What the book actually does is make you a more efficient reader. That is, whilst you won't read any faster, you will be able to skip over "clutter" and focus instead on the "spine" of what you need to extract.

This book is well written, and has a number of helpful tips that I can honestly say have greatly increased my efficiency. For example, his tip that you can extract the information that you need from a book/document by reading only the first line of each paragraph has dramatically increased my productivity at work, where I have to read several hundred page long documents on an almost daily basis. He also suggests drawing a "mind map" after each book to flex your memory muscles and make sure you extracted exactly what you meant to.

All in all, the book has honestly taught me some very helpful tips. If like me you are in a job that involves lots of reading of long worded reports and documents, then the tips in this book could be extremely helpful time savers. However if you are a general reader, then you probably won't get any faster because of this book. In this sense it is more of a professional development, rather than a personal development book. For anyone whose job involves heavy reading, I would strongly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not speed reading, but effective management of information, 19 May 2008
By V. Filipenko - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book teaches you how to manage information well, especially if you have large amounts to read through. Things like skimming, scanning, elimination of unneeded material are tought in the book. Plus you get a lot of general tips about reading efficiently.
But as to the actual speed of your reading - only few techniques are given (i suppose they are important!), but it doesn't go into depth and widht of it... So, it is good for people who deal with a lot of books, lectures, notes, etc. But it's not the best if you wish to purely increase your reading speed. I recommend it for your overall education.
