Product Description

The Booklist
Dessen is an absolutely wonderful writer - stylish, smart and funny

Review
'This is a touching book about friendship, love and denial. Well-written and subtle, it tells Caitlin's story with compassion and has the reader genuinely rooting for the confused girl who keeps making the wrong decisions. Sarah Dessen's next book, 'Someone like You', will be published in July 2003, and looks set to increase her growing female readership.' (The Bookseller )

'a moving account of a teenage girl's involvement with a violent partner ... Dessen pitches the narrative voice perfectly, so that the reader flinches with just the same surprised shock as the main character herself when the boyfriend first smacks her in the face.' (Michael Thorn, The Scotsman )

'Many readers will be able to relate to the pressures and dilemmas Caitlin faces and this absorbing book certainly provides much to think about.' (BookTrusted News, Spring 2003 )

'Dessen's readable style and convincing portrayal of an intense, physical adolescent love should ensure a wide readership for DREAMLAND which addresses important issues about date violence against young women.' (Books for Keeps )

'Dessen is an absolutely wonderful writer - stylish, smart and funny.' (Booklist )

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning, 3 Jun 2006
This book moved me in a way I had never felt before....

The story focuses on Caitlin, a teenager living in the shadow of her older sister, Cass, until Cass runs away from home. Suddenly Caitlin finds herself at a loss without her sister, whilst being the victim of her mother's fussy attention and also forgotten about in the tumult of her sister's disapperance. As a book about the tensions and love between sisters, 'Dreamland' is wonderful enough and I found the novel spoke right to my own experiences of sisterhood.

However the parallel story takes off when Caitlin begins dating Rogerson, a drug dealer, who is unlike anyone she has known before and has many family problems of his own. It is not long before her relationship with Rogerson begins to become damaging and he begins to take his anger out on her. It is this story and the way that Caitlin manages to hide his abuse from everyone she knows that makes the book so powerful. I think that to understand why people in today's society put up with abuse is the key message in the novel, and although I think that I would never remain in a damaging relationship, I never found myself siding against Caitlin's decisions to remain with Rogerson, which in my opinion illustrates the phenomenal persuasive power of Dessen's work.

This is 100% the best of Dessen's books so far and deals with a problem rapidly increasing in everyday society, which teenagers should read about and be aware of.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a wow, 1 Aug 2007
This review is from: Dreamland (Paperback)
I didn't really know what I was getting in to when I picked up this book, I thought it would be one of those basic summer reads sort of thing, but it really isn't, it's a real gem.

It's one of those books that kind of creep on you, and I completely felt for Caitlin all the way through it. She was a very geniune character, and you can understand why she crumbles the way she does. Rogerson is also a very honest character, and despite his many flaws, he is definitely no 2-dimensional.

It's one of the very few books that have ever made me cry (that's right I'm made of stone) but it not just a sad story. It ends with a positive, sort of uplifting message- I say sort of because Dessen lets you know that recovery is a long process. It really is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense and unforgettable, 15 Aug 2006
I'd never read any of Sarah Dessen's books before Dreamland, nor had a read any books that really focused on abuse/teen issues, because to be honest, i thought they'd be too depressing to read in my spare time. But this book has changed my mind. Dreamland was an insightful read, and i found myself relating to the main character, Caitlin, even though i've never experienced anything like that.

I recomend this book to anyone who wishes to be drawn into a character's world and see things from a different perspective.
