The herald

Review

Like the text, Maland's detailed, delicately crosshatched illustrations are funny and poignant (The herald )

The artful text is packed with wit and wisdom, while the pictures are suitably monstrous without being too scary... Jus the job for assemblies, circle times, anxious children - and their teachers too. (Best Books 2003 Scholastic )

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kids confidence booster, 10 Mar 2004
By Lit Chick (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
When we first read this book together my 5-year-old daughter was struggling to muster confidence in any new surroundings: she loved school and old friends' houses were fine, but she couldn't bring herself to go to parties and clung to my legs when going to tea with the new friends she'd made at school. It was tough for both of us.
"You've Got Dragons" is perfect for any kid with this problem, and indeed for all young kids as we expect them to deal with so many new situations all the time, without realising how daunting that can be. After reading this book and discussing it my daughter at last had a way to understand her fears and, just as importantly, she had a name for them. If she had a 'dragon' (a concern or fear of something) she could now tell me easily, and let me know exactly how worried she felt by telling me how big that dragon was. And she was quite pleased to find out that grown-ups have dragons too.
Very soon afterwards she proudly announced that one of her worst dragons simply wasn't there any more, and friends have commented how much more confident she seems. This book probably wasn't the only source of this confidence but it really helped her understand what was going on which is a valuable first step.
Every household with small children should own a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explaining fear and anxiety to young and old readers alike, 23 Jan 2009
By Dominique White (Madrid, Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: You've Got Dragons (Hardcover)
We turn to this wonderful book on days when we know we have to face one of our fears. We turn to this book when we discover, quite out of the blue, that something we once feared is now not scarey in the slightest. We turn to this book when we want to laugh at the Maths teacher being gobbled up by a dragon. We turn to this book when we feel we are the only ones carrying around an enormous load on our backs.
I cannot thank the authors enough for this wonderful resource and the friend who gave "You've Got Dragons" to me (not my son) as a present years ago.
