Review
'A thrilling medieval murder mystery about friendship, loyalty and doing what is right.' (The Bookseller )

'Bridget Crowley has done a magnificent job recreating the ambience and ethos of a 13th century cathedral and its choir school. All the while crafting a suspenseful narrative plot with rich and sympathetic characterisations ... an engaging and atmospheric tale.' (Sam Mendes, director )

'A gripping story with a fascinating insight into life at this time.' (Jill Slotover, Financial Times )

'An excellent read' (Armadillo )

'A small gem ... subtle, realistic and well-paced, it's full of feeling, and the dialogue rings true as a tuning fork.' (Hampstead and Highgate Express )

STEP INTO THE DARK: 'A highly likeable and accomplished first novel . . . (involving) a range of well-drawn characters. Briskly paced without being rushed, the story will engage readers of 11 and above with its real sense of urban teenage life.' (TES )

By A. Dines "kidz-books" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
John's life is thrown into turmoil when his stonemason father dies and he is left at the mercy of the Canons at St Aeldred's Cathedral, where he is taken on as a choir boy. John is expected to aceept his fate with humility and gratefulness, but finds it hard not to resent the bullying, lies, beatings and worse, which go on under the roof of the Cathedral, adorned with the angels his father carved.
His foot crippled from the accident which killed his father, John - or "Peg" as he is re-christened by the choir boys - has to fight accusations of having the devil in his foot, and learns to live as one who is "marked" like the Jews with their enforced yellow badges.

Peg's only real friend in the Cathedral School is Hugh, another choirboy who is open and honest, and the only boy who seems not to be under the influence of Matthew, a fierce bully who rules the roost in the Choir School.

Then Hugh is chosen over Matthew as the Boy Bishop, and things start to spiral into a web of deceit as Peg overhears whispered conversations between men who should be leading the Cathedral town in an example of godliness.

Things come to a climax at the Feast of Fools, and Peg has to decide exactly where his loyalties lie.

This book is loosely based around the legend of St. Hugh and is set in a 13th century Cathedral town. It starts off rather strangely, until we become familiar with the time and setting, but after the first few chapters, I was hooked! (c)Avital Dines http://www.kidz-books.net
